Write a Resume that will get you noticed.

A resume is your marketing document. Done well, it impresses potential employers and allows you to meet them in an interview.
Your resume must convey who you are and what you can bring to a potential employer.
For the best chance of securing an interview, tailor your resume to suit the job you’re applying for by highlighting your appropriate skills and experience.

Don’t send the same resume every time!
Be conscious that it‘s likely to be read alongside several others. Don’t be afraid of self-promotion. You won’t get the interview if it doesn’t stand out.
Resumes should be well written, relevant and full of action words demonstrating your experience and how it benefits your employer.

What every resume should include:

Personal information

  • • Personal information belongs at the top of a resume and should include name, address, phone number and email address.
  • • You can also include your citizenship and any security clearances as these will be relevant to some roles, particularly with Government.
  • DO NOT include any other personal information such as interests, hobbies etc. Your resume is a business document and this information is not relevant.

Job objective (Optional)

This helps to show your interest in the role and the direction you want to take your career in the future.

This section allows you to highlight your skills and abilities most relevant to the role you’re applying for. Don’t forget to tailor your resume for each individual position.

Employment History

  • • Dates of employment (including months)
  • • Name of the company you worked for
  • • Position title

Remember to use action words to explain your skills and highlight the duties relevant to the position you’re applying for.

Education

Include degrees, certifications, courses and awards, the name of the education provider and dates completed.

References

References or referees should be previous managers or supervisors where possible. As a courtesy, always let your referees know about a possible call so they’re well prepared when the call does come.
